Bologna produced one of the most surprising results of the Serie A season by beating AC Milan 4-2, and the night belonged to Samuel Mbangula. The 22-year-old left winger marked his first Serie A start with a hat-trick after having played only 14 minutes across three brief substitute appearances without scoring. It was a stunning turn for a player who had been struggling to make an impact, and it instantly changed the mood around Bologna's season.
Mbangula could scarcely believe what had happened. 'I still can't really believe it. It all feels like a wonderful dream,' he said after the match. 'That was, without any doubt, the best evening of my entire life.' The words captured the sense of disbelief around a performance that had come almost out of nowhere.
Italian newspapers heaped praise on the winger, highlighting both the hat-trick and the broader significance of Bologna's win. For a club that had endured a difficult start to the campaign, the result against Milan was more than just three points. It was a statement that Raffaele Palladino's side are beginning to find their feet.
Mbangula joined Bologna on loan from Werder Bremen in the summer. He had moved to Werder from Juventus Turin for €10 million in summer 2026, but his spell in northern Germany fell well short of expectations. In 27 appearances for the club, he scored only three goals—the same tally he matched in a single night against Milan.
Werder coach Thioune was not surprised by the outburst. 'I'm not surprised, because we've always known about his potential,' he said. 'Bringing out that potential, whether by Sam himself or by us, was always a little more challenging. But we're still convinced that he's a really good footballer.'
Thioune also pointed to the difficulties of Mbangula's first year in Germany. 'In the first year, we also had the problem that he hadn't really settled in culturally and missed his family,' he said. Those off-field challenges help explain why a player with obvious talent struggled to deliver consistently.
From a financial perspective, the deal looks increasingly favourable for Werder. Bologna reportedly have a €12.5 million option to buy the 22-year-old, and Werder also received a €2 million loan fee. Thioune has called it a win-win situation. If Mbangula builds on his display in the coming weeks and months, Bologna may exercise the option, and Werder could end up with a healthy return on a player who had not fully convinced in Germany.
The Werder coach also left the door open for Mbangula to return. 'You can be sure I'm pleased about it. I sent him a message and congratulated him personally. We didn't part on bad terms. He is a Werder Bremen player. And if he comes back in top form, then it can only be a good thing for him to show everyone here in the summer how good he is,' Thioune added.
Bologna's season has been turbulent. After a disappointing start, Domenico Tedesco was sacked swiftly after the fourth matchday. Under his successor, Raffaele Palladino, the team have gradually improved. They beat Cagliari 2-0 at the weekend, and the victory over Milan lifted them out of the lower reaches of the table to 11th.
AC Monza await on Saturday, and that match will provide another test of whether Bologna's improvement is real. A second consecutive win would strengthen the sense that Palladino has stabilised the team. For Mbangula, meanwhile, the challenge is different: to prove that his hat-trick was not a one-off.
At 22, Mbangula still has time to develop. The hat-trick against Milan will raise expectations, but it also gives him a platform. If he can add consistency to his pace and directness, he could become an important attacking option for Bologna. For Werder, his success would raise questions about whether they gave up too soon, while also offering financial upside.
Italian media praise will bring pressure. Opponents will now pay closer attention to him, and Bologna will have to manage those expectations carefully. One outstanding evening does not define a career, but it can change the trajectory. Mbangula's task is to make sure the best night of his life becomes a starting point rather than an isolated highlight.
Bologna's fans will remember the 4-2 win over Milan for a long time. A young loanee's hat-trick, four goals against one of Italy's biggest clubs and a climb up the table made for a rare combination. The next step is to turn that emotion into points and consistency.
For now, all eyes turn to Monza. If Bologna win again, the Milan result will look like more than an upset. And if Mbangula scores again, it will be harder to dismiss his breakthrough as a wonderful dream.
